Avathar was a region in West, along with Aman, but it was farther to the South and distant from the Light of Valinor. It was a dark place, and there a Maia turned beat known as Ungoliant dwelt. She took the form of a terrible spider, and she hid in the cracks of the earth there, until she was summoned by Melkor to do evil deeds.
