Of the Elves
The Elves have many names. They are known as the Firstborn Children of Ilúvatar. The first Elves were awoken into life in far Northeast of Middle Earth, at the bay of the inland sea of Helcar. As they awoke, the Elves first beheld the stars, and it is said that someone proclaimed El! at the sight of them. From this, came the Elvish words Êl and Elen, which mean star. The Elves have always loved their first sight, the stars, and they have often been known as the Eldar, The People of the Stars.
When after Melkor's dark reign was ended by the Valar, the three ambassadors, chosen by Oromë, were summoned to Valinor. The Valar desired for the Firstborn to come to Valinor and live with them. These three ambassadors, Ingwë, Finwë, and Elwë, were later kings of the Elves. They lead their people to Valinor. Those Elves that feared to travel and remained far East are not counted among the Eldar, but are known as the Avari, the Unwilling. Of the Eldar, led by Ingwë, Finwë, and Elwë, there came to be three races of Elves.
