Overview
The Silmarillion is the prehistory of Middle-earth and the events prior to those in Tolkien's other popular works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It starts out with the creation of Middle-earth and the creation of the races of Elves, Dwarves, Men, and Orcs. It gives account of the heroic and epic quests and wars of the Elder Days. Many of the small, casual, yet puzzling facts mentioned in Tolkien's other works are in reference to these events, which span over ages and thousands of years of Middle-earth's amazing history.
