|Race||Men / Ranger|
|Title||King of Gondor|
Aragorn, first introduced in the first book as a myserious ranger. He is a descendant of the long line of Numernorean kings, but has laid in wait for more than eighty years before claiming his heritage as ruler of Gondor. In those years Aragorn was known by many names, Strider the Dunedein cheiftain, Thorongil captain of Gondor, all to hide his true identity as rightful king. It is apparent that Aragorn has much experience in the ways of the world, he is an excellent swordsman as proved throughout the books, as well as a superb tracker, proven when he hunted Gollum across Middle Earth.
Soon after first meeting Frodo Strider managed to save the company of Hobbits from many dangers on their path to Rivendell. He fought off the Nazgul below the tower of Amun Sul, and treated Frodo's wounds. At the council of Elrond he swore to protect Frodo in his quest; however his intention was not to follow the Hobbit on his entire journey, for he was to travel to Minas Tirith and claim his birthright. Either way he proved to be an extremely valuble member of the shortlived Fellowship, he fought bravely in Moria, and led the company after Gandalf's fall to Lothlorien. During the battle of Amon Hen he made the decision to track the two hobbits, Merry and Pippin rather than attempting to follow Frodo. The chase was to no avail, however, as the Hobbits made their own way to safety. During his time in Rohan Aragorn advised the king, but also helped stregnthen the defence of Helms Deep with his swordsmanship. In the film he appears to be leading the Galadhrim in their defence.
It is in the third book that he returned to Gondor, and finally managed to claim his kingship. He was thereafter known as 'Ellessar'. Aragorn lived a long and good life, he wedded his love the elf Arwen, daughter of Elrond, and brought Gondor once again back to strength.
Aragorn appeared in The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers (PS2) and it's sequel Return of the King. He was one of the main characters, bearing his trademark two handed sword, and featuring a 'good all round' style of fighting. Aragorn is also a purchasable hero in the RTS titles, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle For Middle-Earth and The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II. In both games he is a powerful hero, with excellent combat skills and leadership abilities.
The film trilogy
In the films Aragorn is played by Viggo Mortenson. He was widely agreed as an excellent choice, putting great effort into researching his role and really becoming Aragorn.
