TitleLord of the Glittering Caves
Age139 at the time of the War of The Ring

Gimli son of Gloin was a stout-hearted dwatf who had a strong hunger for battle. He was the only Dwarf in the Fellowship, but nonethless he remained true to the company right up until the Black gate.

His journey with the Fellowship

It was during The Council of Elrond that Gimli was chosen to represent the Dwarves within the Fellowship. He was told that no oath bound him to the task, but to that Gimli replied: "Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens." During his travels Gimli wore a mail of rings, and carried his weapon of choice, an axe. When the Fellowship was presented with the choice of passing through Moria, though Gandalf would prefer not to, Gimli was extremely excited at the idea. His cousin, Balin, had been on an expedition to the mines years earlier, but no word had been sent from him. The son of Gloin believed Balin to still live within the mines, and was set on the idea of visiting him. When the company did enter Moria and found Balin's tomb, Gimli was greatly greived, but more than anything angered, which was useful for the following battle.

Gimli and Legolas made for unlikely battle companions

During the company's stay in Lothlorien Gimli took an unlikely liking to Galadriel, despite at first believing her to be a 'witch'. Upon their departure from Lorien Gimli even shed a tear, and treasured Galadriel's gift, her golden hairs, for the rest of his life. This was not the only relationship the dwarf formed with an elf, but he also became great friends with Legolas.

At the battle of Helms Deep Gimli and Legolas took up a competition of who could slay the most Orcs. Legolas ran dry of arrows midway through the attack, and was cut off from the battle whereas Gimli was constantly at the forefront. The dwarf took victory with a score of 42 – 41. Also during the great battle Gimli saved Eomer from two Uruk-hai.

After the battle of Pellenor Gimli admired the fantastic stonework at Minas Tirith, and swore that once Aragorn was king he would offer his peoples services to the city. However the war was not over, and it was soon after that the dwarf marched with the host to The Black Gate, in a sacrificial attempt to bide Frodo time. Against the odds the dwarf survived tha battle, and later made for Minas Tirith a gate of Mithril and dwarven steel.

After Sauron's destruction

Legolas brought Gimli to the glittering caves, in Helms Deep, as was promised. The dwarf was left speechless by what he saw. In turn Gimli fufilled his promise of visiting fangorn again with the elf. The caves had left such an impression on him that Gimli took a colony of dwarves and settled there, while his friend Legolas dwelt in Ithilien, for many long years. However upon Aragorn's death Legolas decided to sail into the west, and called upon his old friend to embark on one last journey with him. So Gimli son of Gloin and Legolas Greenleaf passed away down the Anduin river, to the West.

Gimli has appeared in numerous game titles. He is in the action game The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers (PS2) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King, in which he bears his trademark axe In both titles he is tougher and hits harder than other characters. He also appears as a hero unit in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II and The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth, again bearing his signature axe from the films.

The film trilogy

Gimli is played by the actor John Rhys-Davies in the film trilogy. He is portrayed as a comedic character rather than the serious dwarf from the book, often being on the but end of slapstick humour. He also wears a helmet in the new line film, but doesn't in the books.
